I looked at the big fluffy bed. I had not planned on sleeping in it alone tonight. Oh well, I crawled
in anyway. I laid there for quite some time. A million thoughts ran through my head, I was sad for
Charles. He was so excited about this week and I knew he was innocent. Then selfishly, I was sad
for spending my New Year alone.
I woke up the next morning to a beautiful snowfall. I kept hoping to hear from Charles. Finally
about 10:00 I ordered breakfast and afterwards decided to go to the hot tub. Somehow the hot
tub is more interesting in a snowfall. I was relaxing when I heard.
“Happy New Year.” I looked over and it was Charles. He looked tired and upset. “They dropped
the charges, but not till this morning. They had to get the herbs tested first. I am so sorry.” I
jumped out of the tub and we embraced in a grand kiss. I was freezing. So I took his hand and led
him inside.
“I was so worried. I didn’t even know how to get hold of you. Are you OK? Have you eaten?” My
jaw was shaking as I stood there in my bathing suit.
“I’m fine. They feed me breakfast.” He saw me shaking and threw a jacket over me. “You’re
freezing. I’ll start a fire, you go take a shower. We came up here to ski didn’t we?” he smiled, but I
could tell he was in too tired to enjoy skiing.
I moved in close to him and slowly moved my hands over his chest. “You start a fire and I will go
start the shower, if you’ll join me?”
“It’s a deal.” He reached down and kissed me, spun me around and gave me a playful swat on
the backside as I headed to the shower.
I lingered for the longest time in the shower, but Charles never showed up. I finally turned off the
shower and slid on a robe. I walked out to the main room. The fire was blazing. Lying on the bed,
still in his coat and boots, was Charles. I could only imagine what his night must have been like. I
put a pillow under his head and he never stirred. I did not have the heart to wake him.
Finally he stirred about 8:30 that evening. I was sitting quietly reading on the couch. “What time is
it?” he could tell it was dark.
“About 8:30 sleepy head. I did not have the heart to wake you. Why don’t you take a shower and
we will go get something to eat. I’m starving.” Without saying a word, he kissed me on top of the
head and went to the shower.
